Homework for Tuesday, December 8, 2020
Hi class! Another challenging day with day 2 of a power outage wind event. :) I'm so proud of how students are making it their focus to be in class if it's possible, and remain in class when myself or the class freezes or breaks up in their picture or voice. :) You are doing a great job waiting for everyone to get their internet back, ready to listen and learn in between all of the interruptions, and getting the work done. :) At this point, with EVERYTHING we've had to deal with in 2020, we have learned that we can accomplish ANYTHING!!!! lol Pandemic, online learning, wind events, power outages........we've got it down! :) One day we will be back to 'normal' and we will look back at this and laugh. But we will also be very proud of how we continued to power through each and every weird thing that we had to overcome and be amazed. Amazed at the fact that, now that it's over, (when eventually it will be) it won't seem like it was such a big deal. Even though it seems like one now. We will just keep chugging along and making the best of this unusual lifestyle we must follow and end up being stronger when it's over. :) Hang in there, we've got a week and a half left of school and then two weeks off!!! Let's start doing the snow dance so we'll have something to play in!!!! :)

PLEASE READ!
Hi class! :) I have received an email from the district that states there is a possibility that we could lose power this afternoon and into tomorrow. I have been asked to provide work so that you can continue your asynchronous learning tomorrow, even if you have no power. So, in the event of losing power, please do the following work if you lose power: Math - Inquiry Lab on Ratios in your Math workbook, pages 15 - 17 - Review your lessons on GCF & LCM for the Quiz on Friday. Think of it as an Art assignment. History - Using your book, create a three-column chart, as stated in Question #7 on page 131. Complete the question and be ready to transfer into a document on Friday. These are easy tasks you can do without the internet. Also, easy assignments to boost your grades, if you complete them. :)

Week #8 - our last week of Distance learning for 6th grade!

**Continue to work on & complete your missing assignments.
Science - ......I think you know what I'm going to say here. :) Go back & review
all of the lessons you completed in Literacy over the last seven weeks.
Write me a two-paragraph essay on what lessons you liked the most
& which concept you think you "mastered" & will never forget.
**Continue to work on & complete your missing assignments.
***Look for a Memorial Day extra for things to do in celebration of this important holiday! If you do anything from the article, please tell me about it. I'd love to hear about it. :) I'll push it out as an optional assignment that you can just create a document in & write me a letter about what you did. I might even give you bonus points for it! :)
***I'm also going to be sending you a link to the Monterey Bay Aquarium! I'm hoping you will enjoy learning from this & the other websites we've visited AFTER our year is over! My classrooms will stay open so you can have access to the links. :) I might even continue to send you neat things over the summer! :)
***Also look for other things I might send you in classrooms. I often come across things I think you'd like & will push them out to you through Google classrooms. It won't mean you have an assignment, it's just a way to share things with you that I think you'll enjoy & learn from. :)
Okie dokie! Here's to a last great week! :)

Hello classes and parents! :)
Here we are in week #7 of Distance Learning.
The District office has posted their decision on how grades will be handled for this Semester. Please be sure to read the email that you recieved, listen to the "Fireside Chat," from Mr. King, or read the Country Journal article to find out about the details.
In short, the work that has been provided to you has been to help you get ready for 7th grade. If you are interested in improving your grades from what they were at the time we closed school, end of 3rd quarter, you need to end strong through the end of the year. :)
I am going to continue to leave grades showing red as missing assignments, so that you can easily see what you need to complete. An adjustment will be made as missing assignments come in, along with the final grades given at the end of the schoolyear, complying with the District's policy on grading.
As stated in many other comments & emails, I hope that you decide to finish these last few weeks strong, knowing that you are helping yourself to prepare for the 7th grade. :) Please stay current working on Week #7 assignments, & then go back to work on assignments that you haven't completed from all other weeks.
Thank you so much for all of your effort. :)
Don't forget to look in your email for the ZOOM meeting information.

Week #7 of Distance/Online Learning - May 18 - 24th.
Please complete the following assignments. Detailed information can be found in your Google Classrooms.
Math - Mrs. Spiegel's class only.
1. Please goto your Google Math classroom & read the directions given there. "SpyGuysMath" again this week. I hope you like it! I created a document you'll find attached in Google classroom to work on & turn in at the end of the week. Record your time on your Math log.
2. Continue working on the Geometry Unit in Khan Academy. Record time spent there onto your Math Log for credit.
3. Don't forget to turn in your Math Log.
This is an easy grade to improve your Math score before the end of the year. You just have to do it. :)
Literacy -
1. Book Summaries :) Same as last week, except choose a different book. You can choose from the 14 books assigned into your EPIC account, titles posted in your Google Literacy classroom, or choose a different book from EPIC of your choice.
If you choose a book that is not one of the 14 assigned, it must have these qualifications:
1. It must be at least 100 pages long = approx. 10 pages read a day.
2. It must have multiple chapters/sections/something, that you can write separate summaries for.
3. It must have a quiz that you can take once you've finished the book.
In a Google document provided, use the formula to figure out how many pages you must read per day to get the book done by next Sunday. Please fill this document out as directed for turn in on Sunday, as well. You will be graded on writing summaries & using sentence structure, capitalization & punctuation, & how well you summarize your chapters in 3-5 sentences per chapter.
3. Record the time that you read in your Reading log daily. Just like in Math, this is an easy grade, just for filling it out.
4. Take quiz on book. You may re-read your summaries before taking quiz.
Science
This week, choose your own animal! :) Using the link provided, you will be exploring the animal of your choice! This is a different link, based on The Aquarium of the Pacific, in Long Beach. Learn a lot about these amazing marine creatures so that we can help preserve their habitats & survival. See Google Science classroom for your assignment where you will be telling me about your five favorite categories you learned about, along with a summary at the end. Have fun!

Week #5 of Distance/Online Learning - May 4 - 10th.
Well, here we are, in our fifth week of not being together! This is the craziest thing, not getting to see & work with all of you everyday! I am missing you so much, but want you to know that I'm enjoying getting your work & seeing how you are applying yourselves. I know it's easier to do nothing, but know that you are "being the best you can be," by getting this work done & done well! :) I am VERY proud of you for your efforts! Don't stop now! Just like Dori in the movie, you just got to keep going until we get to the end of the schoolyear. I know we can do it! :)
So, here it is...........Week #5
Please complete the following assignments. Detailed information can be found in your Google Classrooms.

Week 3 of Online Learning!
Hope you had a wonderful week of not having to think about schoolwork & you enjoyed the outdoors! :)
Please be sure to get your work done within each classroom. Less than 1/2 the class has been working in Science, so you need to get signed in & get the work done. No penalty for late work, so catch up & turn it in. Now is the time to improve your grades if you need to, and keep the grades you have, for those of you working hard each week to get the work done. :)
I know this way of learning is different & that things are starting to get a little crazy after all this time, but I put some new things in the mix, & hopefully, we will start doing classroom ZOOM or MEET's this week. I can't wait to "see" you - I miss you all so much! :) When I have it ready to go, I'll let you know through both email & all classrooms, so be sure to look for it.
Has anyone started their used vegetable growth garden that I sent a link on? Mine are growing like crazy! I'll try & post a pic in the Science classroom. OK
Back to this week's work: All assignments are posted in Google Classrooms
Please read directions carefully, as many students are kinda not paying attention to what you need to do. uh-oh. :/
Math - Math log & Khan Academy for grades. Prodigy & other for fun.
Literacy - Storytelling with words & Pictures
- Continue reading on EPIC for things that interest you.
Science - Plate Tectonics. There are 8 assignments in Classroom, however,
many are reading informational texts & videos. There is one written
assignment to be done at the end, using all that you have learned.
Read the directions carefully & be sure to follow previous paper
procedures to insure a good grade. (proper paper heading, title, spacing....)
Let me know in email if you have any questions!
Have a great week!
*************************************************************************************
Happy Easter everyone! :)
Please check out one of our Google Classrooms for all of the puzzles of Jackie & Shadow & their nest! You've been working so hard trying to keep your brains busy with this new way of learning, I wanted to reward you with something I thought you would enjoy! :) Just be sure to not do them all. lol It's important to continue learning, expand your knowledge in different subjects, & limit your time on the computer. The rain has finally ended & you need to get outside & listen to the birds, smell the clean air, & RUN AROUND!
Even though it's Spring break, this week gives me a chance to catch up with everything, make phone calls to those of you that may be struggling with on-line learning, & re-evaluate how things are going. You can write to me and email me if you have any thoughts on the subject. :) Know that I am super proud of all that you are accomplishing & I'm impressed with your efforts to work in all subject areas that you've been assigned. I'll be checking my email each day, and looking for more fun things to send to you to occupy your time, even though no new work will be assigned to be due. Let me know if you enjoy or do anything via a picture or email! I loved seeing a picture of Joaquin enjoying his first eagle puzzle completed! Bonus points for sure!!! :) For those of you still needing to finish your work from the last two weeks, now is the perfect time to get caught up! Nothing would make me happier than to have full class participation in all subject areas!!! :)
As stated above, this week I'll be reviewing how things have been going with our Distant Learning, posting grades, & sending you some interesting things. I know that there have been numerous problems with the Khan website, working with the work pages I've been giving you, & navigating the multiple classrooms. I have been problem-solving along with you & appreciate your patience in figuring this new way of learning out. We are doing our best, & that is what is most important.
I do encourage everyone to be sure & log-in to AERIES to make sure that you are receiving credit for the work that you are completing. (I will posting all grades during the week) If you see the letters "NA" in place of an assignment score, that means that I have not received that assignment from you yet. If you have an "NA" and are sure you turned in the assignment, it is important that you email me through Gmail & let me know. I do not receive notification from Google Classroom websites when students turn in work after the proposed due date. Please know that during this at-home learning time, I am not reducing grade value of work turned in late. I truly want students to do all of the assignments so that they continue the learning process in order to be ready for 7th grade. Both students & myself need to keep our brains engaged & working, like a muscle that needs to be exercised. So, please be sure to work on your assignments and get them turned in to the best of your ability. Half-credit does not apply during this time. :) Do I hear a loud YIPPEE! :)
So, be sure to check out the classrooms to get caught up on work & to check out anything sent that might be something fun to do! It's also a place you can communicate with each other if you do something & want to share it with the class! :)
Have a very special day with your family today & don't forget to get outside. :) I miss you all very much & look forward to hearing from you.
Take special care,
Mrs. Spiegel
