High Desert School Date 6th grade, 2019-2020
Mrs. Spiegel
Welcome to 6th Grade at High Desert School!! I am looking forward to working with your child and making this a successful school year for all of us!!
Mrs. Millar and I are excited to be team teaching in a block schedule again this year, and I have to say….IT’S FANTASTIC!!! Block scheduling increases the time that a student spends in quality learning situations, encourages more variety in daily experiences, and allows more in-depth and hands-on exploration. Every morning will begin with an 80 minute Math block with our own students. Mondays & Wednesdays students will remain with me for the entire day for spelling, word work, literature, & science. On alternating days, (T, TH) after the math block, sutdents will to Mrs. Millar’s classroom for grammar, writing, & a history lesson. More information and a better understanding can be found in your child’s planner. As well, it will be explained at Back-To-School night.
To insure that each student receives the best learning environment they deserve, I will be implementing my classroom rules & expectations stated below. These rules, along with the Medal of Honor Program, will help each child reach their potential, while allowing their peers the same opportunities as well. I will provide copies of both in a clear sheet which must remain in their binders for reflection at all times. I will be going over all of this information in class but would like you to review it at home with your child as well. Return this signed by Tuesday, September 27th.
This paper will also become a permanent part of your child’s binder.
Thank you in advance for your support this year. Mrs. Spiegel
Classroom Rules Expected Behaviors
1. Come prepared to learn 1. Arrive at school on time
2. Listen & follow directions 2. Have good attendance.
3. Respect your classmates & teacher 3. Always come prepared with supplies & homework
4. Keep hands, feet, & objects to yourself 4. Turn in assignments/projects on time.
5. Be a good listener and talk only when appropriate. 5. Follow directions the first time
6. Raise your hand when you have something to say. 6. Always show your work in Math & write in complete sentences.
Classroom Consequences
Students are encouraged to make good choices in their behavior and are most often given warnings FIRST. Unless a severe offense, I will always give a verbal or visual warning before implementing a negative consequence. However, out of respect for other students and myself, any student that does not respond positively could be be sent to another environment or the office.
**POSITIVE incentives are provided in many ways in my classroom, whether it is individually, as a group, or as a class.
Bottom line – always try your best to conduct yourself in a mature, courteous, respectful, polite, and calm manner and you will have given yourself and others the opportunity to “Be the BEST that YOU can be!”
Homework/Missing Assignment Policy
1. Homework is to be written down daily in the planner provided. Parents, please check here for assignments, notes from me, or HW not done.
2. Homework /class assignments are posted on the whiteboard daily, as well as, in a daily class/homework assignment notebook.
3. As part of your child’s team, please check their planner on a regular basis for assignments, notes from teachers, or other important items.
4. Homework can also be checked ONLINE on the HDS website at: www.aadusd.k12.ca.us/hds. Click on: Academics, then, 6th grade, then, Mrs. Spiegel or Mrs. Millar, then look on their website for the homework section. We do our best to get HW posted as soon as possible after school. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s later due to internet difficulties and/or after school meetings.
5. It is VERY important that students complete their homework assigned. Often, the assignment is needed for a planned activity the following day. When the assignment is not done, continuation of learning for that student & the rest of the class stalls in order to adjust the lesson plan.
6. Students who are absent are responsible for getting missed assignments from the class/homework notebook or another reliable student.
7. Absent work needs to be completed in a timely manner and turned in within a couple days.
8. Homework that is not done on the day it is due will be marked as a zero and cannot be made up unless the student was absent.
9. Learning Lab will be provided every day during lunch for students who need to catch up on work, take missed tests, or work independently.
10. Late work will be accepted on completed assignments until the end of the quarter. HOWEVER, it will be for ½ credit only. This is MUCH better than a zero. Be aware that in 6th grade, missing assignments count!! Zero’s will lower a grade quickly. The best way to keep this from happening is to set up an AERIES portal when the information goes home, and with your child, check that homework and assignments are being turned in. By using the student planner and staying ‘on top’ of the AERIES portal, you will stay more organized and aware of your grades.
11. Projects are due on the due date given, even if the student is absent. Late turn in = ½ credit.
Supplies list needed for class and home
This list was sent home the first week of school. Please bring items to class no later than Monday, August 27, 2018. At that time, I will be using class time to organize student binders & set them up in an order to help your child be successful. If you are unable to supply any of the items, please let me know.
Classroom Wish List
If you are interested in donating items to our class, please check our classroom website the same way as stated above. Look for wish list instead of homework. I can truly say that your help is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!
